Canine Distemper

Canine Distemper

Facts

It is contagious and serious viral illness with no known cure

It is diagnosed with biochemical tests and urine analysis

Young, unvaccinated puppies and non-immunized older dogs tend to be more susceptible

It is spread through the air and by direct or indirect contact with an infected animal

In dogs with weak immune systems, death can occur 2-5 weeks after initial infection

Symptoms

Reddened eyes

Watery discharge from nose and eyes

Lethargy

Anorexia

Persistent cough

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Later Stages

Attacks of hysteria

Certain strains can cause an abnormal enlargement or thickening of the pads of an animal's feet

Treatment

Treatment focuses on alleviating the symptoms

Chances of survival depend on the virus strain and the pet's immune system strength

Management

Must monitor for pneumonia, dehydration, or neurological symptoms

Recovery is possible with fully recovered dogs not spreading the disease
